What does every success story have in it but many people lack? It’s the same quality in a person that causes dreams to become real, desires to be obtained, and aspirations to be acquired. Its not mythical or magical but the absence of it is detrimental. I’m talking about one’s PERSISTENCE.
Persistence is the substance of defined determination. It gives life to the wishes and sparkle to the trophy of accomplishment. Persistence is the quality that makes the seemingly impossible, possible and the element that marries a person to their passion. Without persistence, goals gained are simply a given and not earned. The value then is greatly lowered.
So why then are we so quick to trade in our passionate pursuits when faced with resistance?
No Persistence, No Hunger
A quick answer would be that you didn’t want it bad enough. You truly do not hunger for it. Even if you suffer from self-doubt, your desire was not great enough or you would have found a way. As the old proverb says, “Where there is a will, there is a way.”
Here’s An Example:
Let’s pretend that you are lost in the forest for a few days. Being so, what is your desire? It is to find a way out or be rescued, correct? Either way, you want to be back home.
So getting out of the forest is your main focus and desire. I’m sure you would agree that if this scenario were true, you would be 100% determined to find a way out no matter what. And on your journey, nothing matters more than survival and that includes water, food, shelter, and safety.
Now, after the first day you are still lost and very hungry. Do you give up?
NO! You push on through.
Even if you lack food and water, you keep going as much as possible. You look for ways to get out of your situation. You get creative, you get resourceful, and you do things you may not be used to doing. Also, you will undoubtedly be out of your comfort zone while you do them.
So, in order to survive…
- If you had to climb, you would climb.
- If you had to run, you would run.
- If you had to crawl, you would crawl.
- If you had to hunt, you would hunt.
- If you had to fight, you would fight.
My point here is that if you want something bad enough, you will do what it takes to get it.
The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines persistence as: the quality that allows someone to continue doing something or trying to do something even though it is difficult or opposed by other people.
As in my example, if you want to find your way out or be rescued, you would do whatever it took or die trying.
So why is it different with your dreams, your passions, and your purpose?
The reason most people sacrifice them so quickly is because they settle for good enough and what is comfortable to them. Because so, they live out their days wondering around in the forest not sure where they are going.
Persistence takes heart. It involves dedication and discipline with a big slice of stubbornness.
Persistence is knowing that from point A to point B requires many turns and alternate routes. It is never a straight shot. To have persistence, you must be headstrong and unmovable by the negative winds from others. They have their own agendas but you have your dreams and that matters most. Be stubborn and move forward with YOUR calling.
It is YOUR life and not theirs. So don’t let THEIR thoughts poison YOUR passion. Give sight and focus only to your desires and step forward in faith.
“Great works are performed not by strength but by perseverance.” – Samuel Johnson
The Power of Persistence and Pay Back
Those who achieve great success know the power and promise that is only produced by a persistent heart. All successful people have forged through the negativity of others and even their own self-doubts at times. Understand that NOBODY is immune to difficulties.
With any success of significance, you will have to fight through the bad. It is inevitable. So make your mind up now, prepare to win, and be ready to move forward during those hard times.
Remember that obstacles are a given but every one of them are possible to overcome. Your life may be tough but it is never impossible.
When you persistently pay in your time, your effort, your heart, and maybe even some of your blood and tears, that persistence will pay you back in glorious victories.
