It’s January, so guess what I am doing. A body detox to rescue my body from all the holiday goodies that I just could’t resist. Yes, I have work to do on my willpower but until then, a good body cleansing will have to do. But also, I am doing a mental detox and I hope you will join me.
Detoxing your body and mind have major benefits. Not only does it make you healthier, but it also helps you with energy, joy, and confidence to name a few. On top of that, it gets you in gear to get things done. Your goals will not know what hit them!
We know that emotions are powerful forces in our lives. Whether good or bad, they move us in one way or another. However, there are times that when enough of the bad emotions pile up, we are affected negatively each day until we deal with them. That’s when it is time for a Mental Detox.
A mental detox is when you intentionally take time to purge out all the negative junk you allowed to settle in over time. This junk is any emotion that has taken you down and lowered your spirit.
Let’s take a look at 4 of these mental enemies:
- Failure: Failures make you believe that you are not good enough, not smart enough, or not skillful enough to do what you want to do. This is a lie and you have to understand failure is freedom. Yes, I said that. Many people never even try because they fear failing. If you failed at something then you at least tried. That means you are well above the rest. Now just learn from that experience to do better!
- Anger: The wrong types of anger distracts us from our vision and holds us back from our purpose. Only be angry at what matters. Things like child trafficking, spouse abuse, or world hunger. If you are angry just because someone did something wrong to you, let it go and let your life be free from that bondage. Move on. You have better things coming.
- Bitterness: Bitterness is just rotten anger. Like any rotten food, it can make you sick and highly miserable. So get to the root of the bitterness and deal with it quickly. Is there forgiveness that needs to happen? Is there a grudge you need to release? Whatever it is, work it out now.
- Stress: Stress will wear you out! Believe me, I know all too well. It is a handicap of mine that I have to constantly work on to control. It does get easier with time but you have to be intentional. Stress also plays a huge toll on your body and overall life. Figure out what the real factors are that is causing the stress. Is it your money, your job, or your kids? Whatever the reason, there is not a good enough reason to stress. You can do more when you stress less.
Life Will Be Different
Once you have identified all the emotions that are weighing you down, take some time to work through them. Zone in to each one and figure out a way to overcome it. Be prepared to spend a month or more if needed. But be intentional as you do. Don’t just file it away in the back of your mind because if you do, then it will always be there haunting your life.
When you do finally purge your mind of these negative emotions, life will be different. Joy will overcome you, excitement will dance all around you, and confidence will fill you once again.
