No matter if you own a business or just starting out as a company of one, you need to leverage the power of influence. Thankfully, it is not a specialty skill only handed down to an elite few or gained through years of training. We all have some level of influence and use it daily. However, to grow your business you must first grow your influence.
As John Maxwell puts it, “Leadership is influence. Nothing more, nothing less.” In order to build a business, lead a team, or even be a parent, you must have influence. Though influence is highly critical in business growth, acquiring great influence is not as difficult as you may think.
3 Essential Parts of Influence
There are many parts of influence but let’s just focus in on the three essential parts to building your influence. These are the most essential in gaining trust, earning respect, and eventually increasing your business.
To have any type of positive influence, you have to be a person of good character. Your character is formed by your thoughts which then translates into your words and actions. This is the element that builds trust and people only follow or buy from those they trust.
Your character should be one of honesty, kindness, loyalty, faithfulness, and loving. If you fall short in any of these areas, focus on how you can raise them. The lack of these qualities will seriously impact your bottom line.
There are many entrepreneurs that tremble at the mere mention of the word, “Relationship”. They would rather build and create than interact with others. However, building relationships is highly important to one’s success.
Understand that to do anything great, you will not do it alone. To get help, you have to form relationships. The stronger the relationships, the stronger your influence. The more influence you have, the further you will grow your company.
Of the three, wisdom is probably the easiest for entrepreneurs. They usually have a lot of knowledge about their product or service already and it is why they started their business.
As an entrepreneur, you must also continue to grow in knowledge and gain insight in your market. Even if you are at the apex in your field, the world is continuing to advance and so should you.
Your customers want to know they are doing business with someone who possesses great knowledge in their product or service. If you show any lack of wisdom in the market you do business, you will lose their trust and business.
Business of Influence
No matter what business you have, you are in the business of influence. If you have good character, then building relationships will not be hard. People gravitate to those who are honest and caring.
Humans are emotional beings and make emotional choices. If your customers feel that you care for them and they can trust you, then you will most likely earn their business. And that is done through influence.
